A visit to Deyrolle, the 19th-century taxidermy shop on Rue du Bac in Paris, inspired Scott's illustration of Alice's fall down the rabbit hole. The atmosphere of a dusty old museum of natural history recalled Lewis Carroll's description of Alice falling past cupboards and bookshelves. The shelves at Deyrolle were crowded with a surreal menagerie of stuffed birds, butterflies, fossils, and skeletons.
Scott needed good costume reference for this complex pose, so Christina designed Alice's dress and we hired a cutter from the Stratford Festival wardrope shop to build it for our 11-year-old model.
Christina also posed for the interior illustration of the Queen of Hearts.
